She was totally lost now, scrambling in her mind trying to find retorts for him. “Why would I give a sign to someone who has the reputation for being a heart breaker? For all i know it was just a ruse and I was just going to be another girl who got into your pants.” She realised she may have revealed more than she intended with those words, and panic shone in her eyes and she tried to back track. “Not that I care if I was or not but it doesn’t look good to everybody else does it? The queen falls for Darkwater and is totally screwed over by him. What amazing things that will do for me.”
Realising she was babbling she let go of James’ face and drained her goblet before dropping it to the floor and closing her eyes, trying to quiet her hammering heart. “I’m not saying don’t fight. I’m saying don’t go looking for a fight. And don’t pull a stunt like you did last time. And for gods sake don’t face it alone.” She had taken his face in both her hands by the time she reached her last statement, and she was trembling slightly.
She bit her lip and tried to make sense of the feelings that were rushing through her. “James.” she said quietly, her mouth was dry but she couldn’t seem to follow through the thought of getting another drink. Instead she took James’ hand and pressed it to her hammering heart “Look what you are doing to me.”

James raised an eyebrow and listened intently, trying to understand what Hestia was saying. There seemed to be something that was missing from her words, for she hadn't explained why there was such a problem in accepting his advances or at least giving him a sign in secret apart from upholding her reputation. Something was definitely missing, and James knew what it was, yet his mind was telling him otherwise. How could someone have feelings for someone like him? There was no possible way, yet his heart was telling him to trust her, to open himself to her like he hadn't with anybody else.
"Why would you get screwed by me?" he said, confused. "As far as I know, you're supposed to be a bitch, and if someone would screw you, you would screw them back." he added, and looked confused.
She dropped her goblet as she let go of his face, and James cursed inside his head. He wanted more, he wanted her close to him, he wanted to look into her eyes, eyes that she had closed for a reason unknown to him. Then, she started to speak, and by the time she was done, she was holding his face with both her hands. Needless to say, James' heart was dancing to such a fast tune that he was certain it was going to stop from exhaustion at any given second. "It worked, though, didn't it?" he said, and smirked. "We made a pretty good team out there, love, but I won't put your life in danger." he added, looking into her eyes. "There is one person who has angered the Kraken, and that one is me. Even if we fight it together, you know that it's going to attack only the Tidemother."
He felt her hand guiding his own on top of her heart, and he smiled. "I know that feeling. You've been doing that same thing to me all this time." he said, and looked in her eyes. "Don't forget, Hestia. I want to die as much as you want to kiss me." he joked and winked, his cocky grin appearing back on his face.

She couldn’t respond to his counter about screwing each other over. Screwing was so much harder when you had to screw someone you had feelings for, but she wasn’t about to tell him that. She wouldn’t be able to cope with his ego if she told him that.
She shook her head. He wasn’t listening to her, he was going to face the Kraken alone. “The choice to put my life in danger does not reside with you but me. If the Kraken is focused on the Tidemother it leaves its back open to me and I can help you bring it down. And maybe, just maybe the sea goddess will spare us both. There is no way you are doing this on your own.” she wanted to say I don’t want you to do it alone, I can’t bear the thought of you dying and me being left with no one even remotely close to my intelligence to get on with. But she couldn’t, she dared not, to afraid that this might just be a ruse.
She scowled at his reference to their meeting before the Kraken had attacked them and slapped his shoulder. “That’s not funny.” she said grumpily. “Not even a little bit.” she stepped away from him and folded her arms. “I would rather kiss the kraken than you...” another blatant, and very poor lie. “I hate you right now.” she moved away from him and flopped onto the bed, staring at the ceiling fuming slightly at the situation she had gotten herself into.

James hated the fact that she hadn't replied to his question. He hated when people wouldn't reply to the questions that were the most important to him. For one, she had managed to avoid answer the question that would solve the riddle that was her own words. What had she meant back there, and what wasn't she telling him, those were the questions he needed answered right now.
James snorted. "The plan won't work on the Kraken twice." he said, his eyes now looking around the cabin. He was probably looking at it for the last time. "You're not going to take my glory from me, love." he said, every word coming out of his mouth a lie. "Face it, Hestia, I don't want to see you get harmed. Besides, you need repairs. I'm sailing come morning. Even with a headstart, you wouldn't be able to catch us."
He took a moment to realise that he had just admitted that he didn't want to see her get harmed and that he cared for her, and he hoped that she hadn't noticed.
He laughed. "It's a little funny." he joked, but then his expression changed to one of pure confusion. He watched as she made her way to his bed and sat down. He raised an eyebrow. "I'll tell that to the Kraken once I see it then." he said, and smirked. He made his way to her and whispered in her ear. "What if I promise to try and shake it off until the meeting is called?"

She hadn’t missed his words. She had missed that he said he didn’t want to see her hurt. In fact it stood out so much that it drowned out the rest of his sentence. Why would he not want her hurt? She was just another prize for his wall...Wasn’t she? Even so that was a long way to go to make a girl believe he cared, was it a lie or was it the truth? It was her turn to look confused now.
She shot him a dark look before he sat down next to her and whispered in her ear. His warm breath on her neck, sent shivers down her spine and sent her heart hammering again. She turned to look at him, her face millimetres from his. She dug her hand into the bed and resisted the urge to kiss him as best she could and tried to focus on what he had said.
What had he said? She had totally forgotten, his close proximity had wiped it from her mind, she just found herself staring deep into his eyes. “Think Hestia!” she thought to herself but it was no use. “I don’t want you to die James.” she blurted, before she could stop herself “No one else makes my go heart so fast I’m scared it might break out.” There was no going back now, she had done it. So for good measure she added. “And if you tell anyone that I will kill you in your sleep.”
Then she kissed him.

James heart was pounding inside his chest in such a way that James was sure it was trying to claw its way out. He was pretty sure that any other man would have already kissed the beautiful woman in front of him by now, but James, at that moment, cared for only one thing. The fact that his heart was pounding inside his chest and the presence of all those feelings he was experiencing was proof that he wasn't heartless.
Hestia had destroyed that story about him, and James couldn't have been happier. His eyes widened when she confirmed that her heart was beating just as much as his was, and that was proof enough that she had feelings for him as well, at least in his mind. "Hestia, I know of that feeling. It's the same feeling I've experienced each and every time I laid my eyes on you." he said, and gave her a genuine smile.
Her next words made him laugh. "Your secret is my se-". She had kissed him. James hadn't realised it, which was why there was no response for a second. He closed his eyes, leaned even closer and touched her face as he responded to the kiss passionately. For all he knew, this was the last time James Darkwater got to kiss Hestia Black.
Because, deep down, he knew that he had lied. He would sail away to search for the Kraken come morning.
He stopped the kiss after a while, took a breath, and lowered his face. Perhaps it was out of shame or sorrow, he didn't know. He pointed at the rose. "It's yours. Take it." he said, without looking at her. James had proven everything he had wanted to prove. He wasn't heartless, and there was one person in this world that knew about it apart from him.

His response was slow, and for brief second Hestia feared she had made a mistake, but then he returned her kiss with a fiery passion and relief washed over her. She did not want that moment to end; a moment where two captains could enjoy something without to judging eyes of others. A moment of truth.
But he stopped and lowered his head; not looking at her and her heart yearned for him to kiss her again. His words caught her short though and she stared at him. If she was confused before it was nothing compared to what she was now, Why the rose? She looked at it for a moment then back at James’ bowed head trying to work out what had happened in the past few minutes. “No.” she said softly.
She placed her fingers under his chin and made him look at her, a small smile on her face, oblivious to what was going on behind James’ eyes. “Next time we meet at sea, you can give it to me.” they would meet at sea again. Hestia would make sure of it. “Besides which, I can’t leave here with a rose without people asking questions, and I have no intention of leaving just yet.”
Standing up, she let the dress slide off her shoulders before straddling James and kissing him once more. There was no way she was going to let him stop this time.
